Federal Money Missing As Diabetes Education Centre Remains Closed

FEDERAL MONEY MISSING AS DIABETES EDUCATION CENTRE REMAINS CLOSED

Michael Sukkar, Liberal Candidate for Deakin, is calling on Mike Symon and the Gillard Government to immediately deliver on their pledge to restore $8.4 million in funding to Eastern Health as patients hear the distressing news that Maroondah Hospital’s Diabetes Education Centre will remain closed.

“Eastern Health was forced to close the doors of the Diabetes Education Centre in February after the Gillard Government slashed $8.4 million in funding,” Mr Sukkar said.

“While the government has promised to restore that funding, what has become clear this week is that the money is not forthcoming. When will the money be finalised? Any delay is unacceptable when we are dealing with people’s health.”

“News that Maroondah Hospital’s Diabetes Education Centre will remain closed despite the government’s pledge to restore the funding has confirmed our fears that significant damage had already done.”

“The Diabetes Education Centre was a critical service that helped people with diabetes manage their condition and prevent complications such as heart disease and kidney problems. It is devastating for people who relied on this service to hear that it will remain closed.”

“I will work hard to see what can be done to reopen the Diabetes Education Centre including continuing to lobby for the Gillard Government to reinstate the $368 million in funding it will take from the Victorian hospital system after 1 July.”
