LABOR’S FAILED HOUSING AGENDA RESURFACES

The Coalition notes the Albanese Labor government will be reintroducing their failed Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) Bill to the House of Representatives next week.

The Coalition does not support Labor’s $10 billion of borrowed money to capitalise a fund with uncertain returns and no guaranteed revenue stream, so our opposition to this terrible policy has not changed.

On every housing measure things are only getting worse under this government. First home buyers are at their lowest levels since the Gillard Government, new house starts have dropped by 6.6 per cent and new house approvals are 13.5 per cent lower compared to this time last year.

Labor’s failed HAFF policy cannot guarantee a single home will be built before the next election, if at all, and will only see the housing crisis get worse.

Labor still can’t say how many houses this fund will build, where the houses will be located or when the fund will first make a return.

It’s clear that today’s announcement from Labor is nothing more than a political stunt which is typical of a government that’s out of touch with Australians facing real hardships and painful cost of living pressures.

We also note Labor’s threats of using the HAFF as a trigger for a double dissolution election which would, in effect, be a referendum on Labor’s warped priorities and failures in housing.

Ultimately, that will be a call for the Albanese Government to make.
